How to Keep a Long Distance Relationship Exciting (When Every Call Feels the Same)

LDR Activities · September 16, 2026

Here's the pattern almost every long distance couple hits. The first months are electric. Then, somewhere around the point where calls become a routine, they also become... a report. How was your day. Fine. What did you eat. Chicken. You still love each other. You're just bored, and nobody wants to say it.

That boredom isn't a sign the relationship is in trouble. It's a sign that you've been running on spontaneity, and spontaneity is the one thing distance quietly takes away. The fix is to put structure back in on purpose. Here's how we do it.

1. Stop "checking in." Start doing things.

The nightly call isn't the problem; the format is. A call with no plan defaults to a recap of the day, and recaps are boring by nature.

Replace two or three calls a week with a call that has an activity in it. That can be as simple as cooking the same recipe, or as structured as sitting down with The #LDR Activity Book and doing a chapter together — personality tests, quizzes about each other, a relationship bucket list, the sexy crossword. The book exists because we needed a reason for our calls to be about something, and it turns out that's what most couples are missing.

Not sure where to start? Our 50 long distance date ideas is the list we keep coming back to.

2. Build rituals, not just plans

Plans are one-offs. Rituals are the things you don't have to schedule because they're just what you do. A few that have stuck for couples we know:

  • Sunday breakfast call, both with coffee, no phones-in-hand allowed.
  • Wordle (or any daily game) at the same time, results compared before you say good morning.
  • "One good thing" texts before bed: each of you sends the single best moment of the day.
  • Monthly "state of us" dinner: a longer video dinner where you talk about the relationship, not the logistics.

Rituals do the heavy lifting on the weeks when neither of you has energy to be creative.

3. Surprise them, on a schedule

The trick with surprises in an LDR is that they need planning, which feels like it defeats the point. It doesn't. They don't know it was planned.

  • A local delivery to their door (coffee, lunch, flowers) on a random Tuesday.
  • A care package with a theme — we wrote a whole guide to long distance care package ideas.
  • A letter in the mail. Actual paper. See open when letters for how to make one letter last a month.
  • A "cancel your evening" text: you've booked them a movie, a takeaway, and a call. They just have to show up.

Put one surprise a month in your own calendar. They'll never know it was a calendar entry.

4. Play

Couples who play together stay lighter, and distance makes people heavy. Competitive is good. Silly is better.

5. Keep the physical side alive

This is the part people avoid talking about and then wonder why things feel flat. Attraction needs attention from a distance, deliberately.

  • Flirt during the day, not just at night. A message at 2pm that has nothing to do with logistics.
  • Dress up for some calls. Effort is noticed.
  • Have honest conversations about what you both want from the physical side of the relationship while apart. We wrote our bonus chapter, Sex From a Distance, with our Sexologist for exactly this, and it's the chapter people write to us about most.
  • Read our earlier post on 10 ideas to spice up a long distance relationship if you want the practical list.

6. Give yourselves something to look forward to

Excitement needs a horizon. If there's no visit booked, book one, even if it's months away. Then build toward it:

  • A countdown you both see.
  • A shared itinerary you plan together on calls (the planning is half the fun).
  • A "first day" tradition: the same café, the same walk, every visit.

If a visit truly isn't possible right now, pick a different horizon: a shared goal (both run a 5k, both finish the same course), a project you're building together, or a date you'll finish the Activity Book by.

7. Talk about the boredom

The most underrated move: say it out loud. "I feel like our calls have become a routine and I miss feeling excited." It's not an accusation. It's an invitation, and nine times out of ten your partner has been feeling the same thing and was scared to say it.

Then pick one thing from this list — one — and do it this week. Not a whole overhaul. One activity call, one ritual, one surprise. Excitement in a long distance relationship isn't a mood you wait for. It's a habit you build, and it starts with a single call that's about something other than what you had for dinner.
