Open When Letters: 50 Ideas for Your Long Distance Partner
LDR Activities · August 31, 2026

There's a specific kind of helplessness in a long distance relationship: your person is having a terrible day, they need a hug, and you are a rectangle on a screen.
Open when letters are the classic LDR fix — a stack of sealed envelopes you write in advance, each labeled for a moment: open when you miss me, open when you can't sleep, open when you get the job. Your partner doesn't open them all at once (that's the rule). They open the right one at the right moment, and suddenly you're there.
Here's how to make a batch worth keeping, plus 50 label ideas so you're not staring at a blank envelope.
How to do it right
- Write 8–15, not 50. A small batch you actually finish beats an ambitious pile you abandon. You can always mail a "restock."
- Match the energy of the label. The open when you're sad letter should sound like your most comforting self, not a greeting card. Write like you talk.
- Put something inside. A photo, a tea bag, a spritz of your perfume/cologne, a terrible doodle, a $5 bill for a coffee. Flat things ship fine.
- One rule on the envelope: "Only open when it's true." Trust them with the rest.
- Date them. Reading a letter two years later and seeing the date is half the magic.

Make the writing easy on yourself
If you sit down to write 12 letters cold, you'll write three and stall. Do it the way we'd do it: put on music, pour a drink, and use prompts — our 100 questions for long distance partners double perfectly as letter fuel (answer one per letter).
And if you love the idea of structured, guided ways to show up for each other from far away — that's the entire premise of The #LDR Activity Book. Eight chapters of activities, prompts, and keepsake pages you fill out together; the physical book becomes the scrapbook of your whole LDR. Pair it with a batch of open when letters and you've basically got the distance surrounded.
